What You Need for a Successful Day of Surf Fishing

When you feel like casting a line into Yaquina Bay without renting a boat, give surf fishing a try. So what is surf fishing? It’s simply when you catch fish while you stand on the shoreline or wade into the surf.

The most popular catch when you set out for a day of surf fishing is surfperch. In addition to an Oregon Angling License, there are plenty of other tools you need to reel in your catch of the day.

  • Rod and reel: Rods for surf fishing are on the longer side, generally ranging from nine to 11 feet. Your reel should be able to hold 200 to 300 yards of line.
  • Tackle: You’ll want to use terminal tackle, complete with hooks, swivels, lines, and leaders.
  • Bait: The bait you use is just as important as the rod and reel. Popular baits when surf fishing for surfperch include sand shrimp, mole crabs, mussels, clam necks, and marine worms.
  • Footwear: It may not seem like a big deal, but the last thing you want is to be surf fishing in the wrong shoes. If the water is a little on the cool side, wear taller boots that will help keep your feet and legs dry.

Don’t have your own fishing equipment? Visit local shops like Englund Marine and Industrial Supply or Newport Marina Store.
