Try Surf Fishing on Your Next Newport Getaway
Some of the best things to do in Newport take place on or near the water. The list of possibilities is vast—from searching for agates at low tide to heading out with local fishing charters. If you’re looking to try a different kind of fishing during your next Oregon Coast vacation, give surf fishing a try. To help you get started, the team at The Embarcadero Resort & Marina has put together a list of essential equipment and helpful tips.
What Equipment Do You Need?
Surf fishing requires much of the same equipment as traditional fishing. One of the most important items in your tacklebox is your Oregon fishing license. Beyond that, you’ll want to bring:
A rod measuring 8–10 feet for beginners, paired with a reel that can hold 200–300 yards of line
A selection of bait, such as shrimp, sandworms, squid, or artificial lures
A tacklebox stocked with hooks, swivels, lures, and sinkers
If you need to stock up on gear, stop by Englund Marine and Industrial Supply.
When and Where to Fish
Timing matters. The best moments to cast your line are when the tide is rising or falling. Popular spots can fill up quickly, so arriving a bit early helps you secure a good position.
As for where to fish, you’ll find plenty of options near our Newport resort. Surf fishing typically takes place right from the shoreline, though you can wade slightly into the water if conditions allow.
Newport’s north and south jetties are excellent for both novice and experienced anglers hoping to reel in rockfish and lingcod.
Yaquina Bay and Yaquina River offer opportunities for several types of trout, as well as salmon and steelhead.
Head north to Beverly Beach State Park to cast for striped seaperch and redtail surfperch.
