A man surf fishing on the Oregon coast near Newport. Some of the best things to do in Newport take place on or near the water. The list of possibilities is vast, from searching for agates at low tide to fishing with local charters. If you’re looking to try a different kind of fishing during your next Oregon coast vacation, give surf fishing a try. To give you the best chance of being successful, The Embarcadero Resort & Marina team has put together a list of equipment and helpful tips.

What Equipment Do You Need?

Surf fishing requires much of the same equipment as “normal” fishing. One of the most important things in your tacklebox is your Oregon fishing license. In addition, you’ll need:

  • A rod measuring between eight and 10 feet for beginners with a reel that can hold up to 200 to 300 yards of line
  • A selection of bait, like shrimp, sandworms, squid, and artificial lures
  • A tacklebox with a range of hooks, swivels, lures, and sinkers

When and Where to Fish

There is an optimal time to go fishing. Ideally, you want to be at your spot when the tide is either rising or falling. Some locations to go surf fishing are more popular than others, so you may need to head out a little early to ensure you get a spot.

In terms of where to fish, you have plenty of options near our Newport resort. Just like the name suggests, surf fishing takes place on the shoreline. You can also wade slightly into the water. Both of Newport’s jetties are great options for novice and experienced anglers hoping to reel in rockfish and lingcod.

Yaquina Bay and River are another fantastic option for a few different kinds of trout, as well as salmon and steelhead. Head north of Newport to Beverly Beach State Park to cast your line for striped seaperch and redtail surfperch.
